A controversial church has had plans to create a huge car park to serve its annual fundraiser approved.
Mid Sussex District Council has approved the proposals to convert two fields into hundreds of parking spaces at Saint Hill Manor in East Grinstead, the British headquarters of the Church of Scientology.
A cellular paving grid will now be installed with room for 683 parking spaces, along with a toilet block and space for a marquee.
The church said that it needed the extra parking space for its annual three-day fundraiser, which is held each year in October and attracts up to 7,000 followers.
The plans faced objection from locals, who fear the parking spaces could lead to even more development.
Councillor John Dabell told the council’s planning committee: “The determination of this organisation is quite demonstrable.
“Originally, they wanted to build a big unit and were turned down.
“They found out you can build a castle anywhere you want, so they built a castle.
“They have always found a way to do what they want.”
Supporters claimed the International Association of Scientologists event brings jobs and money into the local economy.
Church member Graeme Wilson said: “This approval represents another milestone in our long-standing commitment to sustainable growth while delivering genuine value to East Grinstead and the wider Sussex community.
“We’re thrilled to continue welcoming thousands of international visitors who come to Saint Hill to learn, connect, and contribute positively to the region.”
However, ex-Scientologist campaigner Alexander Barnes-Ross said the five-hectare car park would damage an area of outstanding natural beauty and bring ‘severe chaos and disruption to the otherwise quiet and peaceful town of East Grinstead’.
Councillors passed the parking plan eight to one with two abstentions.
Saint Hill Manor, which was originally purchased by Scientology founder L Ron Hubbard, formed the world headquarters for the church until 1967.
It now operates as the British headquarters, and has been visited by famous Scientologist and actor Tom Cruise on multiple occasions.
